Caring for Baby Teeth: Building the Foundation for Lifelong Oral Health

baby teeth matterThose first tiny teeth that start breaking through your baby’s gums aren’t just cute and photo-worthy—they’re essential. That’s because they play a crucial role in your child’s development and set the stage for their future oral health.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

Although baby teeth (also called primary teeth) might be temporary, they’re very important. Why? These teeth hold space for permanent teeth and guide them into their proper positions. When baby teeth are lost too early due to decay, permanent teeth can drift into the empty space. The result? Potential crowding and alignment issues that might require orthodontic treatment later.

“As both a dentist and a parent, I’ve seen firsthand how healthy baby teeth contribute to proper speech development, confident smiles, and good nutrition through proper chewing,” says Dr Felipe Knob (Dentist). “The care we provide for these first teeth directly impacts how well the permanent teeth develop beneath them.”

Starting Early With Good Habits

Proper oral hygiene should begin before that first tooth even appears. Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings to help remove bacteria and get your little one accustomed to having their mouth cleaned.

Once teeth start to emerge, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush designed for infants. Use water only until your child is old enough to spit out toothpaste (usually around age 2), then graduate to a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Making Dental Care Fun, Not Frightening

Kids respond well to routines, especially when they’re enjoyable. Try these approaches:

  • Brush together as a family to model good behaviour
  • Use a timer or play a favourite short song during brushing time
  • Let your child pick out their own toothbrush (within appropriate options)
  • Read children’s books about dental visits and caring for teeth
  • Offer praise and positive reinforcement for cooperation

Persistence Pays Off

Of course, there will be days when your toddler clamps their mouth shut or turns brushing time into a battle of wills. During these challenging moments, stay calm and be consistent.

Try different approaches—perhaps a different time of day, a new brushing position, or turning it into a storytelling opportunity—but don’t skip brushing altogether. Reinforce the message that dental care is non-negotiable, even when it’s difficult. Doing so teaches kids that oral health should always be a priority.

We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. These early, positive experiences with dental care help establish habits that will help them have a healthy smile throughout life.
